An album worth its weight in gold
The second Drive hits the gas pedal, an unparalleled guitar riff rips through the air and a showstopping beat tears through the speakers. The following statement becomes obvious: Drive is going to be fun.
The Defiants’ new album is a fast-paced adventure from start to finish with addicting vocals and catchy melodies that are reinforced by some truly remarkable guitar playing. With no shortage of new albums available, it’s difficult to know who’s worth listening to and undoubtedly, Drive is an album that simply can’t be passed up. From the exquisite cover art to the infectious tunes, Drive is a medley of stunning vocals and instrumentals, starting with opening track “Hey Life.”
“Go Big or Go Home” has the underpins of a tried and true rock band but offers a fresh take on all things rock. There seems to be a hair band revitalization of late, but The Defiants don’t hitch their horse to that wagon; their sound stands on its own two feet. And that, in itself, is revolutionary. They seamlessly enmesh a fast-paced beat with “Go Big or Go Home,” a guaranteed crowd-pleaser that’s sure to be an instant classic. The track features a chorus that boasts mass appeal and a danceable melody that appeals to a wider audience than other bands in the same genre. But the album is just getting started and Drive isn’t even close to taking its foot off the pedal.
“19 Summertime” offers a multifaceted approach to classic rock without emulating the sounds of yesteryear. In short, there are nods to nostalgic songs but the track itself is executed in a way that offers a revolutionary sound, as does the entire album. Each track encompasses a new musical concept, making this album the perfect soundtrack for any occasion. Drive toggles between metal, hard rock and melodic impressions, with “What Are We Waiting For” presenting as a promising power ballad but winds up being so much more. The instrumentals are as powerful as the vocals and lyrics, the song channeling the best of the ‘80s but doing so in a way that encompasses a modern twist.
There’s no part of Drive that hasn’t been expertly crafted by an incredibly talented set of musicians. The Defiants are driven, as the album title would suggest. Their music is creative, entertaining and guaranteed to appeal to a wide range of listeners and Drive is a perfect example of a band with staying power.
