Intriguingly mesmerizing, with an edge
Known for turning heads with their scorching riffs and mesmerizing sounds, Swedish rock band Ghost released their latest EP Phantomime in May. The record pulls listeners into a vortex, introducing them to frequencies that reach new heights. The eye of the journey starts with the album cover which features a modern-looking, science fiction style tombstone. The gleaming of the light enriches the background, adding curiosity to the album as a whole.
The unveiling of each track introduces a new mood of the EP. The venture through the tomb starts with “See No Evil.” Drums set the track’s pace with a positive sentiment expressed through the lyricism: “You feed the fires of the one you love.”
Up next, “Jesus He Knows Me” offers tantalizing riffs, driving drums and a powerful sentiment. Keeping the album lifted, the song keeps an energetic perspective for observations for listeners to be a part of.
With “Hanging Around” listeners are introduced to power chords with plenty of gamma rays of distortion to seep into a deep soulful abyss into the edge and depth of darkness.
The next track, “Phantom Of The Opera,” carries a whirling, bouncy frequency throughout that satisfies listeners’ craving for high-pitched notes. The tune will undoubtedly keep listeners mesmerized through each beat of the drum. The song also disrupts the average pace of the album, promising to keep listeners on the edge of their seat.
Lastly, “We Don’t Need Another Hero” slows the pace of the EP entirely. With synthesizers and subdued low-end frequencies to contrast the high end of the vocals, the track takes the soundwaves down an interesting path. “We don’t need another hero / We don’t need to know the way home” carries a finale of splendid vocals and lyrics that bring listeners home to their consoling grave of rest for the understanding of what beckons beyond the physical presence of the present.
Overall, Ghost’s Phantomime EP offers encouragement and delight to listeners’ eardrums. Each track evokes new hope for listeners feeling any mood, allowing the stresses of everyday life to pass into thin air and melt away.
