A legendary artist comes to a legendary venue. Killer Mike will be performing at The Apollo Theater on July 20th.
The rapper has been releasing music publicly since 2000 and has become a name synonymous with a classic style, rhythm and flow, and with being an artist who looms larger than albums and records.
Starting on an Outkast LP, Killer Mike was shepherded into hip hop by legends in their own right, cementing the possibility of Mike having success when he struck out on his own. He did so in 2003 with his debut solo album Monster.
Throughout his career since then, Mike has released 4 more solo albums and has continued to collaborate with fabulous artists in hip hop, rap and beyond. He’s worked with Outkast, TI, EL-P, and more. With El-P, Mike founded a duo that went by the name Run The Jewels, perhaps what Mike is most known for in the music stratosphere.
Killer Mike is so much more than just a musician though. On top of being a rapper and a songwriter, Mike is an actor and an activist. He is best known for his work in destigmatizing “gang culture,” focusing on inequity, systemic racism, and police brutality. Mike has collaborated with Senator and Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders as their ideologies for creating a better future line up. Mike is outspoken about creating a more equitable and just society, using ideology to uplift underrepresented communities.
Killer Mike brings these ideas to his music as well, a socially conscious rapper who talks about important issues in his songs. His most recent album Michael speaks on issues in 2023 and includes artists such as CeeLo Green, Mozzy, Young Thug 6Lack, and more.
Mike is now touring for that album and beyond, visiting 19 US cities, including the July 20th date at Harlem’s Apollo Theater.
