Japanese Breakfast is set to make their Walt Disney Concert Hall debut with a set of songs from Michelle Zauner’s early underground punk days. Japanese singer-songwriter and classical guitarist Ichiko Aoba is set to join Japanese Breakfast on Thursday, September 28 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California.
Following the conclusion of her first-ever book tour in honor of her celebrated memoir, Crying In H Mart, Zauner is heading back on the road. The singer and guitarist has announced a series of live shows with the indie pop band Japanese Breakfast. The band is set to make special appearances at various music festivals including Primavera Sound in Spain and Lollapalooza in Stockholm. The group will also join Beck and Phoenix on selected dates during the Summer Odyssey tour this August. Within the handful of shows that Japanese Breakfast is set to perform throughout the U.S. later this year includes a very special performance at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
In her memoir, Zauner speaks about heartache, pain and her identity as a Koran American woman. In her latest album, the Grammy-nominated Jubilee, she speaks about the complete opposite: joy. Inspired by Björk’s Homogenic, Zauner touches on the themes of optimism, pleasure and validation. Japanese Breakfast was formed by Zauner as a side project in 2013. In 2016 the band released their commercially successful debut record Psychopomp via Yellow K Records. After signing with the label Dead Oceans the band released their second and third studio albums 2017’s Soft Sounds from Another Planet and 2021’s Jubilee. The band’s third album earned them two Grammy Award-nominations for Best Alternative Music Album and Best New Artist while also earning their landing their first record in the Billboard 200 charts. The album is a complete switch up in comparison to the band’s previous two records as Zauner had previously written lyrics from a place of grief.
Japanese Breakfast is described as an indie pop band with elements of experimental, lo-fi and dream pop. The band’s live performances are often praised for being welcoming and genuine. Zauner is often seen as charismatic and passionate on stage showcasing her love for music and performances.
