TLC at FPL Solar Amphitheater on June 3rd

Watkins and Lopes broke away from another group in 1991, which eventually resulted in the formation of TLC in Atlanta, Georgia. They soon met Thomas, a local producer named Dallas Austin, and Pebbles, a musician, composer, and producer who ended up managing them. In February 1992, they secured a record contract with L.A. Reid and Babyface’s brand-new label, LaFace.

TLC, one of the greatest-selling female groups of all time, rose to fame in the 1990s by fusing post-new jack swing R&B and pop. Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, rapper Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas all successfully combined catchy choruses and bouncy funk with a lighthearted and self-assured attitude to appeal to both pop and R&B listeners. Their appearance complemented their sound, with a flashy, extravagant outfit supporting both their style and energy. Though the successes continued coming, the band fell into disarray after their second, star-making album, CrazySexyCool, and it took them nearly four years to produce their follow-up, Fanmail. They had three multi-platinum albums and nine Top 10 Hot 100 songs under their belt by the end of the 1990s. In 2002, devastation followed – Watkins and Thomas continued to record and perform as TLC after Lopes’ death in a vehicle accident until the late 2010s.

Melanie Stewart: Hi! My name is Melanie and I am a music business/management student at Berklee College of Music. As a young child, I began vocal training and continued up until my second year of college. My experience in music has lead me to many opportunities including performing at local clubs/cafes, joining a band, and writing my own music amongst other things. Outside of music, I have a passion for business and design. I have been able to create my own business as well as co-design a website for a peer project to be used for their company. I hope to perfect my skill and further my education.
