The Sisters of Mercy are coming to The Moody Theater on May 27th

Big News! The Sisters of Mercy will be taking the Moody Theater stage on May 27th, 2023! This new-wave band can be classified as post-punk and gothic rock in their music and image. Come enjoy one of England’s leading bands in the goth industry as they sing their top hits from the past 4 decades!

The Sisters of Mercy formed in 1980 in Leeds, England. The band was originally formed by member Andrew Eldritch and former member Gary Marx. They formed the band because they have always dreamed of hearing their voices on the radio. Since their formation, they have had 17 different lineups with the only constant being Eldritch. The current lineup has been together since 2019 and consists of Eldritch on vocals, keyboard, guitars, and drum programming, Ben Christo on guitars, backing vocals, and bass and Dylan Smith on guitar and backing vocals. Ravey Davey tours live with the band and he works as the Doktor Avalanche operator.

The band’s first performance was in the Riley Smith Hall of Leeds University. Their first single hit the public at the end of 1980 and was titled “Damage Done/Watch/Home of the Hit-men.” The unique name and sound caught the public’s attention, especially the use of the Doktor Avalanche. The Doktor Avalanche is a drum machine invented by Eldritch himself. It has recently been called the “Digital Doktor.” It is also designed by Eldritch and is a custom-built laptop. It is constructed by English Military software and hardware.

Their first studio album, First and Last and Always, was released on January 1st, 1985. After this release, founder Marx left the band whilst on tour, but the band completed the tour. Just 5 years after the formation of the band, they disbanded shortly after the tour was finished due to creative differences. Eldritch remained the only member of The Sisters of Mercy and on his own recorded the band’s second studio album, Floodland, that was released in 1987. This album was less guitar based and more keyboard-oriented with nodes of rock within it. The band soon added new members and although the line-up has constantly changed before 2019, they have toured multiple times and even released a 3rd album in 1990 titled, Vision Thing. Each album has a different and unique sound due to different people playing and producing it!

There has been no official new material since 1993, but there has always been speculation that Eldritch has something up his sleeve. He even joked with the public that he might have to write a brand new album after the outcome of the 2016 election, but this did not actually occur. The band has been known to play slow and gloomy metal, but also incorporate dance beats in their music that puts the crowd on their feet. This is one show you won’t want to miss!
