Alicia Keys has had a passion for music since she was a little girl. She started receiving training on playing the classical piano at the age of 7 and studied music, dance, choir and theater at a professional performing arts school at the age of 12. After learning all she could about classical music, she took up jazz at age 14. Not only was she eager to learn, but she was eager to create music in her youth. At age 12, she started composing her first songs and signed to Columbia Records at age 15. Wanting to pursue her music but still caring about the importance of education, Keys graduated high school a year early and finished as valedictorian of her class at 16 years old. After parting ways with Columbia Records, Keys released her debut album with J Records on June 5th, 2001, titled Songs In A Minor. This album signified Keys creative freedom and the control of her own voice within the music industry. The album was extremely successful and earned Keys five Grammy Awards in 2002 and a number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 list with the single “Fallin’.”
Keys’ success did not stop there. Her second studio album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, reached new heights and granted her four more Grammy Awards at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards in 2005. Although only 22 and relatively new to the music industry, Keys had so many unique experiences and hardships in her young life that The Diary of Alicia Keys was mature, cultured, and sophisticated. She continued to break records by becoming the first women to have an MTV Unplugged album come in at number one with her first live album in 2005. Her 3rd, 4th, and 5th album all debuted on the Billboard 200 list and sold over millions of copies worldwide. After 8 incredibly successful studio albums, Keys started her own independent record label called Alicia Keys Records. She released Santa Baby, her first Christmas album, under her label on November 4th, 2022.
Apart from a successful music career, Keys has made waves in the world of philanthropy and skincare. She has received multiple awards for her philanthropic efforts. She is the co-founder and Global Ambassador of a non-profit organization that provides access to medicine and care for those suffering with HIV and AIDS in Africa and India called Keep a Child Alive. She received the American Express Impact Award for her unwavering passion for fostering female artist growth in the music industry and for co-founding another non-profit called She Is The Music. Keys launched her very own life style brand in September of 2020. Keys Soulcare’s mission is to make clean and aesthetic skin care and lifestyle products that don’t break a customers budget.
Keys has been named the “Queen of R&B,” has shown the world she can play two pianos at once and has sold over 90 million records across the globe.
