In honor of their new album, Continue as a Guest, The New Pornographers will be going on a North American tour and Austin is the 6th stop on the list! The Canadian indie rock band will be hitting the stage with special guest, Wild Pink, on April 25th at The Paramount Theatre. Continue as a Guest is a very special album for the band and will be a treat to hear performed live!
Formed in Vancouver in 1997, The New Pornographers have been making headway since the band first got their start. Current members include Neko Case on vocals, John Collins on bass, Carl Newman on vocals and guitar, Todd Fancey as lead guitarist, Kathryn Calder on keyboards, vocals and guitar and Joe Seiders manning the drums and vocals. All original members were faces in the music scene in Vancouver before deciding to join together. Their first 4 albums, Mass Romantic, Electric Version, Twin Cinema and Challengers all placed in the top 40 on “The Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop” year-end polls. Between 2000 and 2006, the band was hard to ignore by the public because either one of the bands albums was charting or one of their solo projects was charting! Their success did not stop there. Their sixth studio album, Brill Bruiser, broke their personal record in the charts and reached #13 on the Billboard 200.
January 9th, 2023 was a big day for the band. They announced their ninth studio album, their brand new tour and dropped the single, “Really Really Light,” all on the same day! It was also their announcement that Continue as a Guest would be their debut album with Merge Records. The buzz surrounding the drop of Continue as a Guest was significant and the album was released less than 2 weeks ago on March 31st, 2023. Kathryn Calder sat down with our very own, Kennedy Oliver, for an interview about the new album.
In the interview, Calder states that Continue as a Guest is about having your “own little space in the world, do what it is that you do and enter in at the world as a guest.” She talks about how COVID-19 had a large impact on this album and we have all felt like guests of the world as we enter back into society. She adds that the album has the feeling of “reemerging and continuing on as a guest in the world.” She speaks of how different it felt to create this album while not all being together because that is something the band had never experienced before. In regards to the upcoming tour, Calder says that “It is amazing to be back out with friends and the band, back performing for people because I really missed it.” Read the entire interview and learn so much more about this new album in mxdwn’s interview with Katheryn Calder.
