Dream pop infused with a retro aesthetic
Pollen by Tennis is simple yet complicated. It gives the listener what they want to hear whether that be easy pop melodies or intricacies within the song arrangement. Both the songwriting and production are nostalgic yet progressive at the same time. The tracks on Pollen are produced with a new wave sensibility and appreciation for present culture. Tennis pursues a typical modern indie rock/pop feel on most songs, which features upbeat drums, heartfelt synthesizers and airy vocals. It all sounds very contemporary, but at the same time a large influence derives from past musical generations. Some songs give off a 1950s feel and some feel like they were made in the 1970s. Different generations can be heard through individual sounds on each track, presenting a variety of retro tones in the mix.
One particularly sentimental track would be “Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight,” which includes heavily 1980s sounding bass and drum tracks, complemented by equally dated synth lines. This track feels old, but it is washed with a current polish from today’s day and age. “Pillow For a Cloud” shows its roots through Alaina Moore’s vocals which are reminiscent of the 1950s. Moore sings with an easygoing sense of looseness. This track is effortless, emotional and almost timeless in the sense that it pays tribute to a golden era of sound. Tracks such as “Forbidden Doors” give off a lo-fi vibe which seems to be a common theme throughout Tennis’s recording history.
Tennis is a tight, talented band. Their tracks are put together in a balanced, curated manner. Nothing is too much or too little on Pollen. The tracks have a driving rhythm yet allow lots of space and air into the mix. There is a prominent influence towards many older genres while pertaining to a progressive sound. Tennis understands moderation, utilization and creation. They explore different sounds within Pollen yet stay true to their individual identities. The project is easy to listen to and even easier to go back to. Tennis is a must-listen for any of those who enjoy easy, relaxing and catchy music.
