Bedroom pop icon, Clairo, recently posted an intimate cover to folk singer, Vashti Bunyan’s, “Winter Is Blue” on YouTube. Originally released in 1970 on Bunyan’s debut album, Just Another Diamond Day. Both artists known for their melancholic storytelling, Clairo proves to be the right voice to do the cover justice as she’s accompanied by her acoustic guitar in her bedside performance.
“Winter Is Blue” carries the sadness of a love with fading passion, comparing the isolation of losing emotional connections to the coldness of winter. Softly singing, “Our love is dead, Nothing but crying, Love will not find even, One more new morning”. Clairo provides an even newer layer to the already stripped back sound of the song, through the simplicity and rawness of it just being her and guitar.
Aside from Clairo’s cover, Bunyan has also re-entered the public light with her newly released memoir, Wayward, Just Another Life to Live, under United States publisher, White Rabbit. This memoir details Bunyan’s life, career journey, and the years after she retired from her spotlight as a musician.
“Winter Is Blue” is the most recent release from Clairo, along with her single released earlier this month titled, “For Now”. All proceeds from this song went to For the Gworls, an organization dedicated to aiding Black trans people with rent, gender affirming surgeries, and other necessities. As well as donating to Everytown for Gun Safety which is an organization working to prevent gun violence.
