If you have watched any major film or popular TV show, you have probably heard a song or two from M83. From “Midnight City” featured in Warm Bodies, “Wait” featured in The Fault in our Stars, Revenge and Gossip Girl and the entire soundtrack of Oblivion, M83 has taken the music and film industry by storm. Lucky for Austin locals, the band will be performing at Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater next week on April 14th! The French music group added Austin, Texas to their list of stops for their Fantasy 2023 Tour with opening act, Rachika Nayar. This will be their first tour in 7 years!
M83 was formed in 1999 in Antibes, France by Nicolas Fromageau and Anthony Gonzalez. Gonzalez is a multi talented musician with skill in vocals, synthesizers, programming, mixing, producing and playing a multitude of instruments. When Gonzalez was only 17, he bought a synth to record his first demo in hopes of his dream of music taking off. While Gonzalez was still in college, M83 released their first self-titled album on April 18th, 2001. It included 14 songs that fell into the genre of alternative music. Now, M83’s music can be described as new wave, dream pop, electronic, and full of ambience.
M83 saw success internationally, but hadn’t quite reached U.S. territory just yet. That was until the release of “Midnight City” in July of 2011. The single made headway and charted at #1 on the Top 100 Tracks list. The single landed them as #5 on the Triple J Hottest 100. The “Midnight City” and Grammy Award-nominated album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, was released on October 18th, 2011 and led M83 to take the U.S. by storm. “Midnight City” now has over 850 million streams on Spotify and counting.
In more recent news, M83 re-released Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming in 2021 for its 10-year anniversary to honor what an impact the album had made for the band’s success. On January 10th of this year, M83 released a brand new single titled, “Oceans Niagara” to officially announce their brand new album, Fantasy. The album was released on March 17th and contains the hit songs “Water Deep,” “Laura” and “Amnesia.” The tour will consist of front man Anthony Gonzalez, and band members Kaela Sinclair on keyboards and vocals, Joe Berry on piano, synthesizers and saxophone, Théophile Antolinos on guitar, Julian Aoufi on drums and Clément Lines on bass.
With a large discography of 9 studio albums, two soundtracks and a unique sound, you don’t want to miss this show! The sound production, lights, and aura of the performance will make you feel like you’ve just stepped foot into your favorite movie. Tickets are on sale at any ticket resale site.
