The Grammy-winning rock band Weezer performed a surprise show at West Hollywood’s The Roxy Theatre on March 15. The one-and-a-half-hour show included lots of fan favorites, the return of beloved songs and the live debut of an OK Human track.
Ahead of their Indie Rock Road Trip! tour, Weezer performed an intimate pre-game show at The Roxy. The venue was jampacked within minutes of the legendary pop rock band taking the stage. Being in such proximity to Beverly Hills, it was only appropriate for the LA-based band to open with their homage to the city and hit song, “Beverly Hills.” Things only got better from there as the group tested out the rest of their setlist on the enthusiastic crowd.

The sold-out venue was filled with Weezer fans of all ages, including a fan of merely a few months old. At exactly 8 o’clock the crowd went wild as an audio introduced the band. Within seconds the entire venue was rocking to a Weezer classic. With every subtle transition came a burst of passionate cheering. The alt-rock back performed fan favorites such as “Pork and Beans,” Island in the Sun,” “Hash Pipe,” and more. The entire venue shook as the crowd sang along to the Weezer classic “Say It Ain’t So.”

As the crowd continuously formed the “W” for Weezer with their hands vocalist Rivers Cuomo joked about the crowd only communicating through signs and woos, but also through the universal love of music. Cuomo momentarily addressed the crowd stating that the band was “trying out some ideas for the summer tour” including performing a few acoustic songs in the middle of their headlining shows set later this year. Cuomo also recalled live debuting three major songs during the last time the band performed at The Roxy Theatre. “In the Garage,” “Holiday” and “Buddy Holly” were performed for the first time in front of a live audience at The Roxy in 1993. Keeping the tradition alive of live debuting new songs at the venue, Weezer made the public live debut of the acoustic version of “Aloo Gobi,” the second track from their 14th and latest studio album OK Human. Weezer also performed “Susanne” acoustically before bringing back fan favorite “Only in Dreams,” last performed live in 2015; yes, that guitar solo was spectacular live.

The crowd re-summoned Weezer back on stage for an encore. Oh man did our eardrums almost blowout as the scream-a-long was so intense when Weezer kicked off the encore with “All My Favorite Songs.” The show concluded with two glorious tracks from the self-titled debut album Weezer (Blue Album) with “Surf Wax America” and “Buddy Holly.”
It’s without a doubt Weezer’s surprise setlist trial show was an extraordinary success. Fans can expect similar, if not the same, setlist this summer on the Indie Rock Road Trip! tour. Weezer sets off on tour on June 4 at Huntsville, AL with special guests Modest Mouse, Future Islands, Spoon, Momma, Joyce Manor, and White Reaper on selected dates.
