Originally introduced to the world as Erica Wright in Dallas in 1971, Wright went to a school of the arts and joined the workforce as a teacher as well as part-time singer when she opened for huge artist of the time, D’Angelo at a 1994 concert. D’Angelo‘s manager, Kedar Massenburg, was surely impressed with the performance she gave and linked her up with the singer to record a cover of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell duet “Precious Love.” He also gave the younger artist a chance every musician strives for and signed Badu to his recently formed Kedar Entertainment label. He also worked as producer for Baduizm.
Ms. Badu grew up listening to ’70s soul and ’80s hip-hop, but she drew more likeness to Billie Holiday around the time of her breakout in 1997, after the release of her first album, Baduizm. The grooves and production on the album were bass-heavy R&B, but Badu’s pleasurably tired, yet occasional anguished vocals and delicate phrasing quickly removed her from the space of mainstream R&B singers of the day. As a talented and hard-working singer/songwriter accountable for all but one of the songs on Baduizm, she scored a number 12 hit with her first single, “On & On,” thwarting the album to number two on the charts.
