22/2/23 – Chicago, IL – Thalia Hall
The New Zealand singer, Kimbra, comes to Thalia Hall on February 22nd! Originally getting recognition by appearing on Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”, Kimbra has launched a successful career on her own. The synth heavy and obscure drum beats in her music are reminiscent of Björk and Imogen Heap. The enigmatic artist’s new album A Reckoning is being released on January 26th and will be on tour to showcase it.
Kimbra has released three singles expected to be on the next album. Recently released was their third single; “foolish thinking”, which features Ryan Lott of the band Son Lux. The ambient song includes trickling piano rolls and an echoing drum beat. The single discusses the frustration that comes when you lend a hand to someone and it doesn’t help.
The second single “replay!” is a classic Kimbra song. It features a fun drum beat and synths that crawl through your headphones. The song discusses how there is someone Kimbra can’t get out of her mind. The song is possibly influenced by technology. The chorus has Kimbra singing “I’m master of my domain” in a robotic voice. Whoever is in Kimbra’s mind could be replaying just like a TikTok video.
The first and last single before A Reckoning’s release is “save me”. The single is another ambient song of echoing drum beats and synths. The song discusses Kimbra feeling like she needs to rely on someone to drag her out of her depressive emotions.
According to ticketweb, A Reckoning will be produced with the help of Son Lux’s Ryan Lott. Kimbra hopes that they can connect with the album as the world continues to change.
Opening for Kimbra is Tei Shi! The singer has three studio albums and has collaborated with artists like Blood Orange and Glass Animals. Recently the pop singer released the catchy single “GRIP” which discusses Tei Shi setting a boundary with someone who continued to take from her. The second single “Bad Premonition” talks about seeing warning signs and trying to avoid them, but ultimately being unable to escape them.
