Super famous Doom Metal heavy weights CANDLEMASS comes to San Francisco to bring gloom and grooves!
Candlemass, if you haven’t heard; is to doom metal like what Metallica is to thrash metal! These guys are that serious and big! I love these guys! I remember listening to these guys like crazy back in high school! I love their first three albums from the late 80’s! I never put down the time to catch up with the rest of their discography but I am sure it is great great epic doom filled stuff! The album artwork is always so unique and very inspirational! Very much more like a cinematic experience in a fine art museum than a metal group. Just look at the cover art for Nightfall (1987), Ancient Dreams (1988), and Tales Of Creation (1989). My favorite song from these guys is Bewitched off their sophomore release Nightfall. Maybe it sounds so cliche but man that song got me hooked and out of all the amazing stuff I’ve heard from them that song is definitive CANDLEMASS. I remember learning how to play that song back in high school with the major help of that website Songsterr! This band is a truly good example of just some of the heavy, heavy artistic and honestly, truly God given talent that Europe, namely Sweden, has produced! More songs I really recommend are Mirror Mirror and Cry From The Crypt off their third album Ancient Dreams. I love the vocals! So epic! So much like a dark opera! Well I guess more like something from a tights wearing, rope swinging, stage play on Broadway. Bottom line; very very talented dramatic and theatrical singing!
Well on too the venue, DNA Lounge. Man things have changed. DNA used to be a place for punks and goths. O well. Anyway I went there for Bay Area Deathfest 4 and the bands were great and I made great memories there meeting guys from different bands. But other than that I have nothing to say. No matter what, I still recommend you go. Just eat a hardy meal before you step in the venue. The food DNA has is….Well… Ya… And the pricing….. Well at least I got a cool free DNA pen!…..?….
