Inspired by ’60s chamber pop as well as underground college rock bands like Felt and Orange Juice, Belle and Sebastian began around the intellectual and sometimes risqué songwriting of Stuart Murdoch in 1994.
What began as a government-funded recording project by a group of introverts who were unsure of their future besides getting into the studio to record a few songs, grew into one of the world’s most active and loved indie pop bands. Belle and Sebastian began in 1994 and quickly went worldwide with their richly orchestrated chamber pop tunes constructed on intricate and delicate melodies that were intended to captivate. The low-budget production of the group’s debut, Tigermilk, didn’t take away from the impact of the songs, and probably provided a connection to the audience and added to the charm and relatability to Belle and Sebastian’s friendly but slightly weird musical personality.
The band outgrew their humble start in spite of being humble themselves, churning out classic albums like If You’re Feeling Sinister and The Boy with the Arab Strap throughout the ’90s. They continued to evolve as the years went on with consistently well-made albums like Write About Love (2010), A Bit of Previous (2022) and Late Developers (2023).
