Death Cab for Cutie is an American rock band from Washington which originated as a side hobby of one of its members, Ben Gibbard, and then turned into a large underground sensation in the 2000s. They will perform in Austin at Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater on both February 9th and 10th, 2023 as a part of their Asphalt Meadows Tour.
Ben Gibbard started the band during his time as a student at Western Washington University. Greatly influenced by 1960s rock, his affinity aligned closely with Chris Walla’s, allowing them to begin writing music together. With the help of two of their friends, they were able to debut as Death Cab for Cutie by releasing their first album in 1998, Something About Airplanes. Throughout the following years, they released more albums, including We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes (2000), The Photo Album (2001), and Transatlanticism (2003). The singles that helped them reach their current level of fame and success include “Soul Meets Body” and “I Will Possess Your Heart.” These singles were propelled into the top five on the Billboard 200 charts, further solidifying their space in the industry.
Throughout their time releasing music, they reached unimaginable success for an indie band, including 7 nominations for Grammy awards in categories such as Best Alternative Music Album, and Best Rock Album. Their success was due to their ability to maintain an indie-rock, underground spirit while remaining mature in their musical decisions.
