Album Review: White Lung – Premonition

Acknowledgement to a fervent parting

Canadian punk band White Lung released their fifth and notably final album titled Premonition. White Lung are on a whirlwind journey through birth, rebirth, growth and defiance. White Lung have curated a fiery, ruthless and ultimately punk listen that never falters from driving guitar riffs and bludgeoning drum solos.

“Hysteric” immediately opens on a heart-stirring and thrilling guitar trick known as sweep picking, non-surprisingly being brandished in the most heady and captivating way followed immediately by a staggering and mind-boggling drum single that escalates the ultimate potency of this track. Mish-Barber Way seals the first single on a throaty and tuneful finish with the lyrics “Trapped between the lead / you see the big prize inside my sad eyes/ and it’s more than you’ll know.”

“Date Night” is an omnific and anarchic reimagining of a date with a drunken God who is portrayed as a creedless bad-boy who takes to the streets while on a bender, driving lead singer Mish Way through the cunning, seedy and beautiful deceptions of L.A. Detailed with bursting guitar licks and recollections of anger towards expired youth. There is an intentional dissonance in the lyrics “I’m on a date with God/ and he’s drunk/ He took me back to his Cadillac/ Singing Hank all the way.”

“Tomorrow” details lead singer Mish Barber-Way’s journey as her focus is shifted after finding out about her first pregnancy, Mish Way sings about her priorities and axis aligning into unknown territory. However, the message is more sentimental, the cutting edge and quintessence drum and guitar singles remain refreshingly unchanging.

“Under Glass” is a deliberate musing on self-reflection with transcending guitar riffs that are demiurgic and prelusive. White Lung focuses on feeling, guises and restraints that force introspection.

White Lung’s Premonition has infused a combination of blazing defiance and self-reflection while bringing the roof down with their fiery exit on this fifth and final album. This album is a punk rock fever dream with delicious guitar riffs and earth rattling drum solos. Premonition is for the opportunists and do-overs, it crawls with earnest inflection and grit that is awe-spiring and singularly dissident.
