Venom and Slayer may have begun death metal in the ’80s, but it wasn’t until bands like Morbid Angel that came towards the end of the decade that death metal was pushed powerfully, both musically and lyrically. Morbid Angel (along with their peers Death) helped to spearhead a death metal movement.
Trey Azagthoth (guitarist/songwriter), successfully maintained his position throughout the musical chairs of spots in the band during their career. Over their first few releases, Altars of Madness (1989) and Blessed Are the Sick (1991), the group’s lineup consisted of Azagthoth, David Vincent (vocalist/bassist), Richard Brunelle (guitarist) and Pete Sandoval (drummer). Erik Rutan quickly replaced Brunelle. After 1996’s in-concert Entangled in Chaos, Vincent left and was replaced with Steve Tucker.
Tucker lasted for Formulas Fatal to the Flesh (1997) and Gateways to Annihilation (2000), before he was replaced with Jared Anderson (vocalist/bassist). The band spent the summer of 2001 touring U.S. arenas along with Pantera and Slayer as part of the Extreme Steel Tour. After briefly rejoining the band and recording their seventh album, Heretic, Tucker left yet again and was replaced by Vincent. Although the band continued to tour, a new record wasn’t dropped until 2011.
After another hiatus in releasing music, Tucker rejoined Morbid Angel after Vincent left again. Morbid Angel scheduled a tour for a year ahead for 2018, and in the meantime released their ninth record, Kingdoms Disdained, in December 2017.
