Guitarists Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton formed Queensrÿche in 1981 in Bellevue, Seattle. Both had been playing in heavy metal cover bands and decided to form a group that would play originals. The duo brought in high school friends vocalist Geoff Tate and bassist Eddie Jackson, as well as drummer Scott Rockenfield. The group decided to do things differently and rehearsed for two years before taking to the stage, eventually recording and releasing a four-song demo. The ep caught the attention of local record store owners Kim and Diana Harris, who willingly offered to manage Queensrÿche.
Although Queensrÿche were compared to the pop-metal bands that dominated the American heavy metal scene of the ’80s in the beginning, they are one of the most recognized bands of that time. They were different from popular bands like Kiss and Aerosmith, Queensrÿche constructed an innovative form of heavy metal similar to Queen and Pink Floyd. The band found mainstream success with their 1988 concept album Operation: Mindcrime and its sibling, Empire, the latter of which sold over two million copies due to the single “Silent Lucidity.” They have retained a large following over the decades and are considered one of the pioneers of the progressive metal genre.
