Alternative indie rock band They Might Be Giants will be celebrating Flood’s 30th anniversary playing at Union Transfer on Wednesday, January 11th and Thursday, January 12th. The band is known for their absurdist, satirical wordplay and catchy melodies appearing on film and TV soundtracks such as Austin Powers, Meet the Robinsons, Coraline, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and plenty more.
The band formed in 1982 by John Linnell and John Flansburgh. The two met as children in Lincoln, Massachusetts and wrote songs in high school. They formed their musical group as El Grupo De Rock in 1991, later settling on the moniker They Might Be Giants inspired by a George C. Scott film. They started with Linnell on accordion and saxophone and Flansburgh on guitar with a backing drum machine. Their music reflected the experimental and new sound of New York’s post-punk underground. The duo founded the Dial-A-Song service where they recorded their songs on an answering machine and advertised their phone number. The Malcolm in the Middle theme song “Boss of Me” charted in Europe and won the duo a Grammy in 2002. They extended further into new genres of music with their album Here Come the 123’s winning a Grammy Award for “Best Musical Album For Children” in 2009. They Might Be Giants has since expanded the band’s following with their unique wide ranging music.
In 2020, they released the compilation Modern to benefit band and crew members during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their latest 2021 album Book accompanied by an art book of photography, reached #88 on Billboard 200. Recently, Book has been nominated for “Best Boxed or Special Limited-Edition Package” in the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.
