Gypsy punk rock band Gogol Bordello will be playing at Brooklyn Bowl Philly on Wednesday, December 28th. The performance will feature the band Crazy & the Brains.
Started by lead singer Eugene Hütz in 1999, the band is known for their theatrical stage shows and Romani/East-European music, citing their main influences as Jimi Hendrix and Parliament-Funkadelic. Hütz lived as a refugee in Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Austria and Italy following the Chernobyl disaster. He then came to New York, forming a band of immigrants from Ukraine, Ecuador, Russia, and Ethiopia to play gigs and make music relating to the immigrant experience. Their name is inspired by the classical writer Nikolai Gogol and the Italian word for brothel, “Bordello”.
The band has toured throughout Europe and America, appearing at international festivals and touring with bands like Primus, Flogging Molly and Cake. They’ve made appearances in films such as Everything is Illuminated and Filth and Wisdom. Since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Hütz has been vocal about raising relief funds for victims of the tragedy, releasing the single “Forces of Victory”. Their new album SOLIDARITINE expresses the upbeat message of human potential, empathy, and humor.
