Album Review: 16 – Into Dust

Hard-hitting themes, intense instrumentation

Sludge metal band 16 has been raising hell since 1991 and last month the band released the album Into Dust. Each song contains ear-bleeding guitar playing, thunderous drum beats and mind-dazzling vocals. Into Dust is filled with promising music that is capable of jolting the veins of those who are listening

“The Deep ” is a dark ditty that has a sinister vibe consisting of deep instrumentation. The electric guitar playing hums quietly in the background while the bass shakes things up with vibration. As a whole,  “The Deep ” is the slowest track on the album, and 16 have done a great job with using their instruments to express how they feel.

Dominant “Null and Eternal Void” is a killer composition that features a great vocal performance from Bobby Ferry. While listening, Ferry’s strong and noble voice brings a sense of authority while he shouts outs the lyrics. The best part is feeling the strong anger leaving his mouth letting listeners know how upset he truly is. “Null and Eternal Void” is a mind-dazzling tune that shows what kind of a vocalist Ferry is.

Headbanging “Never Paid Back” is another sinister piece but what really captures the dark theme is the guitar playing. Ferry and Alex Shuster’s guitar skills sizzle with excitement, each riff bringing a threatening vibe of violence while Barney Firks’ bass guitar fills the atmosphere with cutting riffs. “Never Paid Back” screams anger with all three guitarists using their skills to create an intense musical world.

Dangerous “Dressed Up To Get Messed Up” is an addictive track that has catchy drum playing from Dion Thurman. Right at the beginning, booming drum beats welcome listeners to 16’s chaos before switching to a fast-paced tempo that matches the level of intensity the rest of the band is playing.  “Dressed Up To Get Messed Up” shows how powerful Thurman is as a drummer.

16 has a hit with Into Dust thanks to the authoritative instrumentation and vocals capturing the essence of the sludge metal genre.
