A group that owns a retro-soul, gospel-esque sound joined by horns and a talented lead singer the band that is known as St. Paul & the Broken Bones’, creating live shows that quickly enthralled avid musical listeners into a fan following when the band started performing publicly in 2012. Born in Birmingham, Alabama in August of 2011, the original band mates of St. Paul & the Broken Bones consisted of Janeway, Browan Lollar (guitar, vocals), Jesse Phillips (bass), Andrew Lee (drums and percussion), Allen Branstetter (trumpet), and Ben Griner (trombone and tuba). They released the 2012 EP Greetings from St. Paul and the Broken Bones without a label, which garnered enough attention to sign a record deal with Single Lock Records.
They dropped their first recording in 2014, Half the City, an album that shared similarities and some inspiration to the Stax and Muscle Shoals records of the late ’60s and early ’70s. The group has since grown in their sound and brought to light more socially aware and personal material to their music, featuring a more enlightened production on albums such as Young Sick Camellia (2018). In 2022, their album The Alien Coast incorporated synths, samples, as well a collaboration with hip-hop artist Randall Turner.
