Tenci started as Jess Shoman’s (lead vocalist) bedroom-folk musical endeavor in Chicago, Illinois in December of 2018. With the help of friends Spencer Radcliffe and Tina Scarpello, it rapidly became a fully-formed group. By spring of 2019, they recorded their debut My Heart Is An Open Field. They recorded the album in just a couple of months. With the experience of playing in the band, Radcliffe understood the qualities the album needed to maintain to stay true to who they were. Crazily and quite impressively, half of the songs were written just the week before. The album kept spontaneity and vulnerability. “It was such a fun way to record without second guessing myself and to let things be.” Shoman said.
“Tenci” originates from Shoman’s grandmother’s name Hortencia, who she feels is her connected spirit. Her memories of grandmother inspired some of those same qualities in her own voice. The end of Side A of the record is a voicemail from her grandmother reminding Jess of her unconditional love, “Don’t get tired of my calls, love.”
My Heart Is An Open Field is about the uneasy feeling of baring your feelings out in the open, where sometimes memories that were once in a slumber, come back to the surface.
