Max Cavalera has been living it up performing since the 1980s. First, as a member of the Brazilian thrashing legends Sepultura, and later as the leader for Soulfly. At his exit from Sepultura in 1996, Cavalera swiftly went out to create his next musical venture. After leaving Sepultura which became one of the most popular heavy metal bands in the world, he also dealt with the death of his best friend/stepson Dana Wells. Music became a way to conquer his depression, Max Cavalera put together a band that included Roy “Rata” Mayorga on drums (ex-Thorn), Jackson Bandeira on second guitar (ex-Chico Science) and former Sepultura roadie Marcello D. Rapp on bass. Their self-titled debut album dropped 2 years after Cavalera’s departure from Sepultura in the spring of 1998. Coming up in the late ’90s, Soulfly’s sound includes a foundation of different subgenres of metal and world music, taking away from groove, thrash, nu-metal, and Brazilian tribal music. The band’s 1998 debut certified gold and continued on with releases like Conquer (2008), Archangel (2015), Ritual (2018), and Totem (2022). All albums amassed critical and commercial praise. Throughout the band’s 20 year run, life’s seasons have run its course, with Cavalera being the only constant member.
