Album Review: Frank Bello – Then I’m Gone

Mind dazzling music with undeniable passion

Frank Bellow is known as the bassist for the metal band Anthrax, blowing fan’s minds with his killer guitar riffs. Now Bello has taken a different path in his music career; last month he released his solo EP Then I’m Gone. On each track the instrumentation stays true to the rock vibe with each guitar riff and drum beat bringing forth the desire to headbang. Bello’s vocal performance also remains strong and dominant throughout the EP. Then I’m Gone offers fans an opportunity to see what kind of a musician Bello is outside of Anthrax.

The title track “Then I’m Gone” starts things off with a heavy mixture of punk and rock music. The elements of punk can be heard as Bello speaks out the lyrics at a rapid rate before switching to a smoother and harmonic voice that compliments the rock vibe. Also, the guitar playing is brilliant, and not only are the notes catchy, but they are also the main contributor to bringing the punk and rock tempo. “Then I’m Gone” is a great opener that shows how a mixture of punk and rock music can still thrive in the music world.

Blazing “It Won’t Be Long” is another composition that has amazing guitar playing but this time the drums steal the show. Each drum beat creates the classic rock vibe people want to hear. Right off the bat, the thunderous drumline welcomes listeners into Bello’s righteous world of music and in many ways, the drum playing keeps everything together with deep and vibrant beats that contribute to the classic rock theme. “It Won’t Be Long” is a classy piece with dynamic drum playing.

Bittersweet “See Me Now” ends things on a high note but with a different sound. The previous tracks had face-smacking punk and rock styles but this ditty has more harmony and melody. On this track, it is clear that Bello is a passionate vocalist. As a whole, strong emotion can be felt through the strong guitar and drum playing but the spotlight is on Bello who is singing in desperation mode and wants the listener to see him as a changed person. Also in some ways, Bello is speaking for those who are afraid to voice their feelings of wanting to be accepted by others.

Bello has always been a fantastic musician and with Then I’m Gone, he thoroughly explored who he is within the contours of the project. Bello uses his knowledge of rock to create mesmerizing music that can successfully stand outside of metal music.
