Known for his distinctive baritone voice, Morrissey is coming to perform at The Metropolitan Opera House on Saturday, December 3rd. So far, the singer has cancelled 5 tour dates due to band illness and extended recovery. His show in Brooklyn on November 3rd is set to go ahead as scheduled, signaling that his Philly date will go on the same.
The artist from Davyhulme, Manchester, United Kingdom started playing in 1977 in a punk band called The Nosebleeds. He then began The Smiths in 1982 and broke up in 1988, launching his solo career just 6 months after the split and releasing his debut solo album Viva Hate. His album’s first single “Suedehead” reached higher success than any Smiths single. Since leaving The Smiths, Morrissey has released 13 studio albums. His vocal style traces back to 1960s-era female singers from Northern England and drawing from artists like Patti Smith and Velvet Underground. Singing profound lyrics about relationships, he has become a staple in British music history, winning several NME awards. Despite the controversy over Morrissey’s private life including his animal rights advocacy and political opinions, the artist stands as an influential figure in the Britpop and indie rock genre. Morrissey has yet to release his new album Bonfire of Teenagers. However, he has played songs from Bonfire of Teenagers at previous venues on tour.
His performance in Philly is the second to last date in the tour. The tour wraps December 4th in Boston at MGM Music Hall at Fenway.
