Tim Commerford, bassist for Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave, forms a trio with Mathias Wakrat, and Jonny Polonsky in the new band 7D7D. The trio debuted their new music video for ‘Capitalism’ on November 25 via Mad Bunny Records. Unsurprising given the name of this new single, ‘Capitalism’ critiques the state of the country today and, within the music video, holds a harsh mirror image to the reality that late-stage capitalism has created.

Commerford stays true to his political roots seen in Rage Against The Machine. The song itself lures the listener into a false sense of security with deceivingly upbeat music. The lyrics, on the other hand, are much darker. In cont
rast to the blissful flow of the music, the lyrics focus on the cruel nature of capitalism and compel the listener to contemplate how capitalism has devastated the lives of so many. With lyrics such as “No matter where I am, I’m in Hell.” and “It’s ok to take more than you’re given, even if it might change someone’s life.”, they call out against the system that has caused harm to so many.

Much like the contents of the song, the music video has a similar contrast. The music video switches between videos of the extreme upper class and politicians to poverty-stricken areas. In one moment the video will show people frivolously shopping for luxuries and then follow it with a homeless person alone on the sidewalk. The juxtaposition between the two very real realities within the country highlights the need for change in an unjust system. The music video shines a light upon the enormous wage disparity and evokes a sense of injustice within the viewer. When paired with the bitter, desperate lyrics of the song, 7D7D focuses on a need for change. The message of the song is clear: capitalism is not working and we need to do better.
