The Flaming Lips Close Out ‘American Head’ North American Tour In LA

The Flaming Lips officially closed out their American Head North American Tour on Monday, Nov. 21 at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, California. The veteran psychedelic rock band returned to LA with special guest Particle Kid, Willie Nelson’s son Micah Nelson joining the legendary band on stage.

The indie rock band finally performed in Los Angeles on Monday, Nov. 21 after rescheduling their show at The Wiltern nearly four times. The show was originally scheduled for June 17, 2020, but was rescheduled due to COVID-19. The band immediately addressed the multiple rescheduling of the show making a few jokes about it but most importantly thanking fans for their support.

Nonetheless, The Flaming Lips performed the grand finale of their North American tour concluding their performances of 2022. The show included everything from rainbow psychedelic visuals, giant space bubbles, blasting confetti canons, and so much more. The Oklahoma City band truly celebrated their latest 16th studio album, American Head, with a giant party in a venue full of fans.

The Grammy Award-winning band knows how to party. Their first show in LA in over five years was a success leaving The Wiltern covered in confetti and party silly streamers. The psychedelic rock band is one of the most charismatic acts, creating an incredible atmosphere with intense energy. The crowd cheered non-stop throughout the night and could be heard a block away.

The band performed over 15 songs for a nearly two-hour show. Like every show on their tour, they performed a unique setlist. The Flaming Lips performed some of their hits “Do You Realize??,” “She Don’t Use Jelly,” “Assassins of Youth,” and so much more. The band even got the entire venue to sing “Happy Birthday” to a fan in the front row.

Before their encore, the band asked Particle Kid, Micah Nelson, to join them on stage for “Will You Return/ When You Come Down.” Nelson performed an incredible guitar solo toward the end of the track that made the crowd go wild. The Flaming Lips also brought out 15-year-old Nell Smith whose beautiful voice stunned the crowd with the cover of Nick Cave’s “Red Right Hand.”

The Flaming Lips perform a good show, though some of their live renditions of their music tend to blend into a singular sound. At least for their setlist of The Wiltern, their show was beginning to feel a bit too long without the proper breaks and switch-ups. Luckily, their charisma and fun persona were merely enough to make the night quite enjoyable.

The Flaming Lips already have three shows set for 2023, two of which are in Chicago, Illinois and Washington, DC. In the meantime, the band continues their celebration with the release of the 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Yoshi Battles The Pink Robots. For more on The Flaming Lips visit flaminglips.com.
