William Roberts, originally born in Mississippi, grew up in Carol City, Florida, in an impoverished northern suburb of Miami. Influential artists like Luther Campbell and the Notorious B.I.G. gave a young Rick Ross someone to look up to in the hip-hop industry. He began rapping in the mid-’90s and started a local group, the Carol City Cartel. During the early to mid-2000s, Ross, as a solo entertainer, became popular and well-known by touring with Trick Daddy and appearing as a guest on a few Slip-N-Slide releases around South Florida.
President of Def Jam Records, Jay-Z, signed Rick Ross to a multi-million-dollar deal. One of the many Miami hits, “Hustlin'” was released with Def Jam.The track went gold and hit number seven on the R&B/hip-hop charts by the end of June. In 2006, it reached platinum status in August. From 2015 to 2019, Ross placed another headlining single in the R&B/hip-hop Top Ten, and it was for Suicide Squad: The Album — “Purple Lamborghini,” a Skrillex collaboration nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Song Written for Visual Media.
His album’s Drake-assisted single “Gold Roses” was rewarded with a nomination for Best Rap Song in the 2020 Grammy Awards. Ross’s 11th album, Richer Than I Ever Been, was released in December 2021 and featured appearances by, the-Dream, Future, Timbaland, and Wale.
