Local City By The Bay doomsayers and hardcore Canadians aim to shake things up on the fault line this December at The New Parish located right outside Oakland’s 12th street station.
You like your music hard aaaaaaannnnnd slow you saaaaaaaay? You like to get a little moody and have a bad… Day? Or maybe you just love a good band that really and I mean really has something to say…and say loud! Well two bands are coming to the East Bay to satisfy those needs. First-off; these guys call themselves Kowloon Walled City, and man do these folks have some Grievances. They’re named after the make-shift legendary famed mega-tenement located in Hong Kong before it got torn down after The Handover. Look it up. Well anyway, these guys play some mean and heavy electric guitar riffs filled with distress, frustration, and overall prolonged agony. Kinda reminds me if the punk band Refused decided to go doom metal or something. You got the punk, metal, doom, stoner, and even some shoegaze all wrapped into one. Maybe I missed something but you probably get the big pic by now.
According to Metal Archives, Walled City’s been active since the late o’s, formed in San Francisco and pouring out slow churning hard hitting pieces on albums like Gambling On The Richter Scale, to their latest called Piecework, and my personal favorite, Container Ships. As of this writing they have just over 16 thousand monthly listeners on Spotify. They are truly a hidden gem for me and I believe any metal and rock enthusiast out there and willing to get whiplashed very slowly the best way possible.
The lyrics, according to Metal Archives, tend to trend on complaints of urban life and how society is rotting. I just love the way the vocalist shouts and wails at the mic. Definitely tickles that dark new wave goth ear of mine, but those guitars tremor any speaker like a great echoing vibrating metal tune but really slow and heavy. Songs I recommend to get on the underground wagon would be The Pressure Keeps Me Alive, Your Best Years, and You Had A Plan. These songs really give a great idea of what to expect live. Slow, depressing, and a reason to tremble and cry out yourself. So cathartic 🙂
After Walled City completes their set you’ll get a major change of pace from the mellow droning walled degradation of Kowloon to the steadfast, sobering ludicrous aggression of the headline act. They open for a fast past, hyper, blood pumping trio known only as Metz. Straight outta Toronto, these hardcore punk rock vets come to even the playing feild and will leave you screaming for more! Tracks like Come On Down, The Mirror, and Hail Taxi are some of many songs that really make you propel and rage! Their sound really has an underground y2k hardcore vibe to it. Metz’ music reminds me of the band Converge doing that fusion dance from Dragon Ball Z with Black Flag. They,ve been to the Bay before and you can hear them perform live in 2021 at The Opera House in Oakland on Spotify– a taste before you head to The New Parish. It’s really a great yin-yang. You’ll start things slow, rough, dark, and brooding with Walled City then end the night via a suckerpunch to the jaw with Metz! Whoo! I’m excited! Are you? No? Do you even have a soul?
