Album Review: Clutch – Sunrise on Slaughter Beach

Music brings powerhouse sound

Maryland rock band Clutch have been raging havoc since 1991 and last month the band released Sunrise on Slaughter Beach. As a whole, the record is fantastic because the instrumentation bleeds heavy rock music. Also, the vocal performance is outstanding due to how it remains powerful and authoritative on each track. Sunrise on Slaughter Beach is a killer album that can dazzle the minds of those who are listening.

Headbanger “Slaughter Beach” has righteous bass guitar playing by Dan Maines. Right off the bat, the feeling of the vibrating and deep riffs blares from the speaks with power and the vibrations from the deep notes are strong enough to jolt people’s veins. “Slaughter Beach” is a knockout tune that shows how Maines is not afraid to show off his musical skills.

Jamming “Nosferatu Madre” is a catchy composition that gives an insight of what kind of a drummer Jean-Paul Gaster is because in a lot of ways each drum beats brings a sensation of what hard rock sounds like and his drumming styles brings the feelings the rockness fans want to hear. On  “Nosferatu Madre” Gaster is contributing to the insanity by playing rhythmic drum beats.

Addicting “Mercy Brown” has well-played guitar riffs from Neil Fallon and Tim Sult. Each riff from Fallon and Sult compliments the harmonic/rock style the rest of the band is playing on and toward the end the guitar solos fill the atmosphere with pleasant noises. “Mercy Brown” consists of dynamic guitar playing from Fallon and Sult.

Magical “We Strive For Excellence” is a great number that has a strong meaning behind it. The words “You’re in the Cub Scouts, right?/I believe I need a tourniquet/I can hear my mama calling/Hand over that snake bite kit/We deliver where Knievel faile/What’s a little bit of tetanus/Pledge allegiance to the denim flag/And strive for excellence” is a statement of how the band strives to be the best in the music world. “We Strive For Excellence” is a loud and passionate piece with motivational lyrics.

Closing  song “Jackhammer Our Names” ends things in a bittersweet and different way. Fallon’s vocals are filled with passion while expressing his emotion and in a lot of ways Fallon’s singing style makes this whole composition feel like a war tune by how he wails out the lyrics and the instrumentation brings a hard bluesy vibe. On “Jackhammer Our Names” Neil Fallon’s gnarly voice brings a kick of imagination.

Sunrise on Slaughter Beach is an example of how rock music can still exist in today’s music scene and Clutch do have a hit with this record because the instrumentation and vocals prove how the band is still capable of craft wonderful music.
