The R&B/EDM singer-songwriter Kelela has dropped a new track entitled “Happy Ending,” along with an accompanying music video. This latest offering follows Kalela’s recent single, “Washed Away,” the musician’s first musical release in nearly five years.
“Happy Ending” features the rich and enchanting vocals of Kelela alongside the production of the Berlin based dance producer LSDXOXO and the Toronto based dance DJ and producer Bambii. The track, which a press release has described as being inspired by “the rapture of a club crush and the release after a sexy buildup of tension,” plays the singer’s vocals alongside a droning and ambient synth melody and an intense dance beat, a recipe for a track that is simultaneously chill, sensual and dance worthy.
The video for the track, co-directed by the musician and Alima Lee, intends to offer a look into New York City’s black rave culture. The visual, shot in a square frame, juxtaposes somewhat low quality footage of an energetic rave with occasional photos of Kelela dancing and singing. The close shot view of the rave creates at atmosphere that feels vintage and somewhat claustrophobic. Watch the official music video for “Happy Ending” via YouTube below.
These last two tracks from Kalela act as the end to a half-decade long hiatus from the artist following her 2017 debut album, Take Me Apart.
