Album Review: Röyksopp – Profound Mysteries II

Eclectic and beautiful atmospheric dance music

Röyksopp are an atmospheric and dance electronic duo from Norway. They have released a new album named Profound Mysteries II, which is as fascinating as it is eclectic.

The first song is an instrumental track that sets up the mood for the rest of the album. It is fun and playful, a song titled “Denimclad Baboons.” With a strong background beat and synths, this is a great starter song for the album.

The next song in the collection is called “Let’s Get It Right,” and has a more dance-pop-based theme and includes lyrics. The soft atmospheric texture sets the perfect tone for the vocals to come in with a duet between Röyksopp and Astrid S.

Fourth on the album is “Oh, Lover” featuring Susanne Sundfør. The intense background beat and bass set the tone for passionate lyrics and vocals. Though this song is slower than the first songs on the album, it carries the same amount of weight and energy.

Speaking of slow songs, “Sorry,” feat. Jamie Irrepressible, is next on the album. This heart-wrenching love song consists of a slow, soft piano part and quiet vocals, with minimal additional instrumentation, but just the right amount of effects to add to the atmospheric mood.

For electronic dance fans, “Control” is a piece full of contour and energy. A heavy bass mixed with a relaxed dance beat and background synths makes this song perfect for dancing or relaxation.

“It Was A Good Thing,” featuring Pixx, is a more mellow song with a soft ambient mood. Water-drop-sounding keyboard effects and underlying synths sound wonderfully smooth together under vocals and beat that keeps the music moving.

Overall, the album is a great album for any avid electronic music fan. There is a very nice blending of different sounds, that makes the record feel very diverse and keeps things interesting.
