Album Review: dayaway – dayaway

An oceanside debut

Dayaway recently released her first EP, dayaway. Fronted by Amber Renee, this debut is strong and showcases her style as an artist and musician. With light and positivity, she sings of summer and love through the use of oceanside imagery. Her main accompaniment is steady drums, vintage synths and guitar. This self-titled EP consists of 5 only songs, but sets the tone for who she is as an artist.

“cool water” kicks off the EP and sets a light and summery tone for the album. With delicate, airy vocals, she sings about someone she is interested in and refers to them using lots of summer imagery, from ocean waves to swimming in cool water. This song successfully transports the listener to a sandy beach with blue skies. The instrumentation does not stray from the summery vibes. Synths and vintage-sounding guitars fill the background, keeping the song light and upbeat.

The title track “dayaway” continues the summer vibe. Similar guitars to the previous track and quaint piano sounds lay on top of steady laid-back drum beats. This song is very relaxed, the perfect background soundtrack for time spent at the beach. She sings of not being able to forget a lover and asking them to give her more time before they leave. While the message is slightly sad, the music still carries a warm, optimistic vibe.

“beach 90th,” the fourth track on the EP, carries the same type of sound but this time with a nostalgic tone. The vocals are still nice and breezy as she sings of going back to old times. She asks someone to come meet her back in the old places and times before everything changed. The song is easy to listen to as her careless and free vocals float over those magnificent synths.

The final track, “summer’s end,” brings bright guitars and upbeat drums to the aforementioned beachy ambiance. She sings about the summer ending even though she wants it to never end. She reminisces on losing a summer fling as the season’s imagery fades away. It is the perfect closing to this sunny album.

Overall, dayaway’s debut album is a short, but complete, collection of songs that show off her artistry. Her fanbase is sure to grow as she releases more uplifting music in the future.

I listen to every genre, but my favorite is indie-pop. I have studied and learned to play many different genres of guitar, from classical and rock to pop and indie. I also play piano and have begun to write music. In my free time, I enjoy exploring new and upcoming artists, photography, and writing music. I have attended Berklee College of Music, where I learned more about the music industry, guitar theory, music production, and songwriting. I also love to attend live music events and am often at The House of Blues in Boston checking out my favorite bands.
