Gorillaz is an English virtual band formed in 1998 by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, from London, England. The band has four fictional members. The band has a universe of its own that is presented in music videos, interviews, comic strips, and short cartoons.
Gorillaz began as an experiment for Albarn, a way for the singer to explore music his Brit-pop band Blur otherwise couldn’t make but the “virtual band” he conceived with artist Hewlett became more popular than expected and ended up being one of the most successful projects for Albarn. Gorillaz’s debut album was a hit right away out in 2001 when the album came out.
Albarn uses Gorillaz as an outlet to address political and societal concerns, which was taken a step further with 2010’s environmentally-minded Plastic Beach. The cartoon characters gave Gorillaz a unique touch, cartoons represent joviality and creativity.
Gorillaz often collaborates with all kinds of musicians. The guest musicians have helped Gorillaz stay surprising and current over the years, the group has recorded with Del the Funky Homosapien, De La Soul, Shaun Ryder, Mick Jones of the Clash, Lou Reed, James Murphy, André 3000, George Benson, and Elton John.
