The Houston native Robert Earl Keen is visiting Austin on August 28th and 29th. Keen is an American singer-songwriter and entertainer. Keen started playing music the summer before starting college at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. The first experience Keen had with music was learning how to play the guitar, and then he started learning how to play classic country from a songbook.
Keen graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, and started writing songs and playing folk music for fun. After graduation Keen moved to Austin, Texas where he would start performing in live music venues nightclubs. in 1983, Keen won the New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, Texas.
When Keen moved to Austin he worked as a writer for a newspaper. But even though Keen was a writer at first he always took music seriously and made it a priority. In 1984 he financed the recording of his own EP and distributed it regionally.
What started as a hobby became a successful career for Keen. After so many years of hard Keen who’s 66 now just announced his retirement. According to RollingStone, “Beloved Texas singer-songwriter announced his retirement with a heartfelt if surprising note on his website.”
For those who are big fans of Keen , he will host a fan-appreciation party on Sept. 5, details are not known yet.
