UK electronic artist Vonica emerged in 2018 from the ashes of an indie-pop band when a major creative partner quit music to become a priest instead with his debut solo Ai, a drifting summary rhythm mash inspired by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Sol De Nit followed shortly after the four-track EP, led by the bouncing lead tune Swing State. A slew of trendy shows performed at the time, including Baio (Vampire Weekend), Pick a Piper (Caribou), and Tik Tok phenomenon Eyedress.
Come 2022, the long-awaited If You’re New Here Dance four-track EP, led by the intoxicating titular banger and its evil cousin, the shimmering dancefloor workover, If You’re New Here Dance – Hot Chip Remix, courtesy of the cult UK band’s drum/synth programming maestro Felix Martin. Sonia Bernardo contributes a female voice to the forthcoming single Some Swim, Some Pray, another collaboration on the EP.
In 2022, the Italian actress Monica Vitti died and significantly influenced this new music. The name Vonica was created as an accumulation of his muse of Vitti and the great Italian filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni. To Vonica, his new music allows her soul to live on, despite her no longer being on this earth.
Vonica’s latest song, “Making Music Is,” exclusively premiering with Mxdwn Music, gives viewers a lively and somewhat gritty overview of the nightlife scene that provides a fun and electric dance vibe that doesn’t need a dancefloor to be enjoyed. “Making Music Is” whatever we want it to be, which is the most fun part of this song. The is no limit to music; there is something peaceful about that, and Vonica expresses it well.
