Album Review: Halestorm – Back From The Dead

Mind-jolting rock

When the pandemic started two years ago many bands took the time to create new music. For the band Halestorm, the challenging time gave them an opportunity to create an album, releasing Back From The Dead earlier this month. Vocalist/guitarist Lzzy Hale, drummer Arejay Hale, lead guitarist Joe Hottinger and bassist Josh Smith give each track a face-smacking dose of strong vocals and instrumentation.  Halestorm knows how to dazzle people’s minds with their amazing musical style in Back From The Dead.

Title song “Back From The Dead” is a great example of how talented Lzzy Hale is as a singer. Right off the bat, her dominant vocals welcome listeners to a world that is filled with positive energy, and with every high note, the feeling of freedom can be felt. “Back From The Dead” kicks things off with a smashing vocal performance by Lzzy Hale and the positive emotions can motivate some people to have a healthier life.

Electrifying “Strange Girl”  has killer guitar playing from Hottinger, producing riffs that are capable of shaking the veins of those listening. In this composition, Hottinger spices things up with deep riffs that contribute to the endless energy and excitement that the rest of the band is playing on. “Strange Girl” is a mind-dazzler that features  Hottinger’s strong guitar performance.

Headbanger “The Steeple” sticks to the band’s roots due to the dynamic drum playing from Arejay Hale. While listening, the thunderous drum playing steals the show, capturing the essence of rock in each beat. Also, the drumming style keeps things together with how fast he can play while staying on a basic musical tempo. “The Steeple” shows how talented Arejay Hale is as a drummer.

Crazy “Bombshell” has incredible bass guitar lines from Smith. What is noticeably great about this tune is how each riff adds more insanity and the sound of the bass guitar shaking in the background, bringing more madness with each note. “Bombshell” is an explosive piece that gives an insight into how dedicated Smith is as a guitarist. He is not afraid of impacting people’s lives through his ear-bleeding guitar playing.

Closing song “Psycho Crazy” is a well-written composition that has lyrics that are filled with strong emotions. The chorus “If you want crazy/I’ll give you psycho/So don’t make me mad/I’ll get sick in the head/And show you what you don’t know/If you want crazy/I’ll give you psycho” shows how some people are not afraid to defend themselves when facing others who continually criticize them about their lives. “Psycho Crazy” describes how some people are willing to fight the negativity that constantly surrounds them.

Halestorm has a homerun with Back From The Dead. The vocals, instrumentation and lyrics can speak for those who are going through the challenges of life.
