Liz Phair: Don’t Holdyrbreat & Gen X Festival at the Walt Disney Concert Hall

Liz Phair took part in LA Phil’s Gen X Festival series on Tuesday, May 10th. Phair alongside Remi Wolf, Bethany Cosentino and others celebrated the anthems of the ‘90s.

The night was hosted by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb. Loeb introduced the theme of the night, Gen X musical anthems, as well as artists performing for the event. Loeb even performed Oasis’ hit song “Wonderwall” and her platinum-selling hit song “Stay (I Missed You)” which is the lead single from the original movie soundtrack to Reality Bites.

Vegabon kicked off the night’s performances with a special rendition of The Cranberries’ “Linger.” It’s hard to decide what was more magnificent, Vegabon’s beautiful voice or her extravagant black denim gothic gown. Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino covered Sheryl Crow’s “If It Makes You Happy.”

One of the most memorable acts of the night was the crowd continuously cheering for the stage crew every time a member went on stage between sets, making the evening just a bit more remarkable. Remi Wolf pumped up the crowd as she ran onstage with a peculiar outfit wearing vintage long denim shorts, a jersey and a racoon tail hat. Wolf performed an interesting interpretation of Beck’s “Loser.” Before her performance Wolf mentioned how she struggled to learn the lyrics, respectfully making comedic remarks about Beck’s odd lyricism. Wolf’s highly intense energy brought several audience members to their feet, the entire venue sang along for the chorus.

Following a quick intermission, Liz Phair took the stage in an all-white denim outfit, thanking the crowd for the warm welcome. Phair performed a mixture of her greatest hits and special covers that fit the theme of the night. Several audience members continuously danced throughout her performance, especially during her hit song “Bittersweet Symphony.” The ‘90s pop rock queen ended the night by inviting Lisa Lobe on stage and Death Cab For Cutie’s vocalist Ben Gibbard, who played the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall pipe organ, to perform a delightful rendition of one of the biggest ‘90s anthems, Oasis’ “Wonderwall.” The entire audience remained dancing and singing along to the final number, producing a fascinating end to the night.
