Amon Tobin’s project Figueroa has its first installment since 2020’s The World As We Know It. The eight-song album twisted and subverted expectations that come along with electronic music, and the new single “Lost & Stray” does no different.

Figueroa is a project that explores the bounds of electronic, psych, rock and folk music. The project is described as being “born in a cabin in the woods.” Tobin recorded the first version of the project’s debut album alone in north California, and he focused on “learning about harmony and (relatively) traditional songwriting.” The creation is described as a “personal exorcism of sorts.”
Tobin’s Two Fingers recently also joined Muadeep on a single, “Blood Moon.”
“Lost & Stray” fits into this almost ethereal exploration of sound, once again employing their interesting use of guitar and asking “How is there guitar with no guitarist?” The “strictly electronic” music is entrancing in its honest artificiality, if it can even be described as such. The sounds just don’t come directly from Tobin’s fingertips, but they are a deliberate creation nonetheless. Perhaps that is why they compare it to a hit film: “‘Lost & Stray’ takes the twist further with electronic music in the form of amplified guitar. It’s like Inception and just like the movie no one really cares about the plot. What matters is the end result is spectacular.”
The press release advises listeners on the nature of Figueroa and how to listen to this work: “Figueroa is full of darkness and wonder. Figueroa is surprising and confounding. Better sometimes to not ask questions and just listen to the music.”
