Catchy retro heartbreak songs
Retro indie-rock band Ceramic Animal recently released their fourth album called Sweet Unknown. After signing a record deal, they headed to Nashville to record. They show their capabilities as writers and musicians on this album through various indie, pop and rock tracks. The album explores the theme of lost love and tells the stories of heartbreak, loss and falling back into ex-lovers.
The first track, “Tangled,” starts the album off with catchy melodies and relaxed electric guitar. They sing the story of coming back to an ex and being ok with it even if it may not be the right decision. The lyrics are simple but catchy. Rhythmic twangy guitars and drums back them. This opener is an easy listen.
The next track, “I Can’t Wait,” takes on a more punk rock sound, but the theme of the lyrics remains the same. Distorted electric guitars and driving drums lead the track. Vocalist Chris Regan sings in his raspy lower register about getting with someone after avoiding them for a long time. The track is high energy and shows off the band’s musical capabilities in a different realm than the first track.
The fourth track, “Long Day,” goes back to a similar sound as the first track. It is a nostalgic message to someone who is no longer part of their life. They miss this person so much that they can not seem to continue without them. The accompaniment mimics the feelings of the lyrics through melancholic background vocals, slow guitar riffs and gentle percussion.
The album’s sixth track and title track, “Sweet Unknown,” is a relaxed and honest reflection on a relationship. Regan sings somberly about falling into someone and needing them. A slow and rhythmic acoustic guitar sits behind the vocals, occasionally accompanied by an electric guitar with gentle riffs. This is one of the most emotional tracks on the album, and they do not hold back with the cracking and pain-filled vocals and crying guitar riffs.
The final track of the album “Valerie” is a high-energy rock song. It is a fun and playful song about a mysterious woman that the singer is still in love with but never sees again. While he is sad that she is gone, he sings happily and nostalgically about their memories together. He seems to be thankful for the time they spent together. The rock sound makes the overall feeling of the track happier than the lyrics express. The driving guitar and drums are filled with guitar riffs and high-energy background vocals.
Ceramic Animal’s Sweet Unknown is nothing short of a great album that explores all the stages of love and heartbreak. They employ catchy melodies, upbeat guitar riffs and clever lyrics to tell their story and create their sound as a group on this impressive ten-song collection.
