Long-time Gil Scott-Heron companion and co-artist Brian Jackson plans to release his own album This Is Brian Jackson, which will be available May 6, 2022. Along with the album announcement, Jackson teases its first lead single “All Talk” produced by Daniel Collás, Phenomenal Handclap Band founder.
Jackson’s new solo album, by BBE Music, is a few months away but the public can enjoy the lead single with its sublime boogie grooves underlined by Jackson’s impeccable songwriting and vocals. “All Talk” begins with comforting church claps and flutes that break into 70s drums that make you want to dance. However the message of the song is a bit more complex with Jackson referencing an underdog society or individual person saying, “You count us out like your nickels and your dimes.” “When are we gonna wake up to the love that’s deep inside,” Jackson pleads with a smooth cadence.
The song is a modern twist to Jackson’s familiar 1970s grooves. In fact, Jackson admitted to producer Daniel Collás he began work on a solo project in 1976 “around the time Gil and I (Jackson) were recording ‘Bridges.’ After learning this, Collás began to formulate a concept centered around the question: ‘What would a Brian Jackson album sound like if the 21st century Brian were to complete that 1976 album today?’ Knowing this and hearing the song’s heavy disco notes, it may be safe to say Collás hit the nail on the head.
“All Talk” comes complete with a pair of complimentary reworks from Swedish producer OPOLOPO, who provides a sublime funkytown version and a tougher, percussion-led club mix for the dancers.
This Is Brian Jackson is scheduled for release on vinyl, CD and digital formats.
