Let’s Eat Grandma Welcome The New Year With New Single “Happy New Year”

Starting the new year off right, the pop-duo Let’s Eat Grandma released a new single, accompanied with a video, titled, “Happy New Year”. Coming from their upcoming album, Two Ribbons, the third track “Happy New Year” is all about reflection, honesty and acceptance.

From Consequence’s report on the single, Rosa Walton is quoted in a press statement saying that she used the song to reflect on her and Jenny Hollingworth’s friendship (which began when they were children) after they hit a rough patch. Walton mentions, “I’d been struggling to come to terms with the fact that our relationship had changed, but as the song and time progresses I come to accept that it couldn’t stay the way it was when we were kids forever, and start to view it as a positive thing–because now we have been able to grow into our own individual selves.”

The video begins with the best friends and bandmates at a distance, across from each other on a tennis court, a sport that can be aggressive and challenging. Their faces are completely serious and they appear to be ready for battle. The synths are quite electric and exciting, but listeners can hear how hopeful the two feel about overcoming their obstacles. Walton reflects on the great memories that the two share, singing, “Do you remember how we spent our days at the end of my/ garden?/ Summertime, rope swings/ Say the things that no one knew about us?/ Well, there’s no one else who gets me quite like you.”

It’s a story of two childhood friends recognizing that they were growing apart, but, in the end, learning to accept the changes, as well as learning to progress how to move forward in their friendship. As a reflection of their ability to move forward in their friendship, the two come together in the end, celebrating the new year with fireworks and hugs. Take a look at the video below.
