Record brings heart-pounding collaborations
Hardcore punk band Converge are not strangers to the music scene because they are recognized as one of the most creative bands that have appeared from the underground of punk music. Today, Converge released Bloodmoon: I; each track has an amazing vocal collaboration by Jacob Bannon and goth rocker Chelsea Wolfe. The guitar playing by Kurt Ballou, Nate Newton and Stephen Brodsky (Cave In frontman) gives each tune a kick of strong riffs, the drum playing by Ben Koller shakes the atmosphere with hard-hitting beats and multi-instrumentalist Ben Chisholm uses his skills to contribute to the endless noises of a musical masterpiece. Fans will adore Bloodmoon: I; each song is filled with a hardcore musical style that will blow their minds away.
The opening track “Blood Moon” kicks things off with beautiful vocal performances from Bannon and Wolfe. The chemistry between Bannon and Wolfe is beautiful in this almost eight-minute piece by how both singers have different vocal styles that complements this composition. The mixture of Bannon’s dominant voice and Wolfe’s delicate vocals truly shows how passionate both vocalists are while performing. “Blood Moon” is a genius piece that has Bannon and Wolfe singing their hearts out.
Soft “Coil” is a solid song that has great guitar playing. In the middle of the song, Ballou, Newton and Brodsky fill the atmosphere with hard-hitting riffs that are capable of shaking the minds of those who are listening. Each guitar note blends in with the rest of the instrumentation, and the noise bleeds punk music. “Coil” is a well-played composition that has Ballou, Newton and Brodsky showing the world how talented they are as musicians.
Thunderous “Tongues Playing Dead” is a vein-shaking tune that has smashing drumming from Koller. Right away, vibrations from righteous drum beats can be felt while hearing the music. The drum beats are being played on a simple musical tempo that follows the same flow the rest of the band is playing on. Koller does a great job with creating his own madness on “Tongues Playing Dead,” and each powerful drum beat contributes to the lingering harmonic vibe.
Deep “Lord of Liars” has killer vocals from Wolfe. Right at the beginning, the angelic sound of Wolfe’s voice fills the darkness with bittersweet sounds that will capture the listener’s attention before the endless havoc starts to blare from the speakers. It seems like Wolfe’s vocals steal the show due to how well she sings on high vocal range. Fans will appreciate the effort Wolfe has put into “Lord of Liars,” as Wolfe’s performance is flawless.
Classy “Scorpion’s Sting” has beautiful instrumentation by Converge. The guitars, drums and piano give this track a sense of dreariness with how each instrument is being played on a lower musical scale. The best part can be found in the middle of the tune, where the guitar solo steals the show with blazing riffs. The instrumentation on “Scorpion’s Sting” is gorgeous with how well the band performs together.
Converge & Chelsea brings solid tunes on Bloodmoon: I and the band, in collaboration with Chelsea Wolfe, have hit a home run with this album because they were not afraid to experiment with different elements of music.
