Los Angeles Artist Spotlight: Speakz

Anthony Negrete, better known as Speak or Speakz, is a singer-songwriter and rapper from Los Angeles, California who has previously been known as an infamous ghostwriter for hit songs like Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci.” In 2011, after only having released mixtapes and EPs, he finally debuted his first full-length album titled Inside Out Boy, with help and recorded by Syd Tha Kyd.

In 2015, the rapper relocated to Mexico City after realizing the severity of his bad health due to excessively clubbing, drug abuse, and toxic relationships. There, he connected with his Chicano identity and wrote his third album A Man + His Plants. The lo-fi beat album is full of incredible Spanglish-English mixed lyricism that caught many listeners’ attention back in 2018. A year later, the rapper released his fourth album, Singularity, in which he subtly addresses his queerness.

The long-haired, bearded Latinx rapper has once again raised eyebrows and caught the media’s attention in a video that has recently resurfaced on the internet of his freestyle rap during his appearance on LA’s famous Power 106 FM radio station last March. The video resurfaced as the rapper joined Power 106 again for another episode with the L.A. Leakers for another incredible freestyle performance over Ghostface Killah’s “One” instrumental track. The rapper’s impeccable freestyle and politically charged lyrics have him trending on social media.

On August 27th, the rapper released a new single titled “Barbacoa.” Though the single is short, it is a great small taste of Speakz’s incredible wordplay and flows. Speakz is well-known for his unapologetic lyrics and extremely passionate performances. He recently announced his upcoming album We Left the House For This? News regarding the album’s release date is yet to be known, as though Speakz and his team are creating a sense of anticipation for this project, but for the meantime, fans can enjoy some of his new singles on music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music.
