Freakout Festival is set to return in person on November 11-14, 2021 with a newly-announced lineup featuring Cedric Burnside, Liz Cooper and Matthew Dear as headliners, among others.
Other musicians slated to play the festival include The Seeds, Big Business, The Mystery Lights, Jaime Wyatt, Levitation Room, Clinton Fearon, Acid Tongue, The Vacant Lots, Jarv Dee, AJ Davila, No Joy, The Shivas, Smokey Brights, Pearl Charles and more. Freakout made an effort to include a culturally diverse lineup of acts, including special attention to many Black and Latin American musicians. The full lineup can be found here, excluding any new additions yet to be confirmed.
It will be held at its usual indoor locations along Ballard Ave in Seattle, WA. The venues include Tractor Tavern, Salmon Bay Eagles Club, Sunset Tavern, Conor Byrne Pub, Hotel Albatross, Caffe Umbria and C.C. Filson.
Tickets for the festival can be purchased here, including GA Friday/Saturday Passes, GA Four-Day Passes, VIP Friday/Saturday Passes, VIP Four-Day Passes and Thursday Nectar Lounge Only Passes, for a special Matthew Dear/Manatee Commune show at Nectar Lounge. The Nectar Lounge show will also be included as part of the VIP Four-Day Passes, but will otherwise be disconnected from the rest of the festival.
Matthew Dear is an eclectic musician from Ann Arbor, MI, who has mainly dabbled in pop, dance and rock music. He began releasing music in the early 2000s that has since found cult appreciation, but his 2018 record Bunny found him his most popular songs, including “Modafinil Blues” and “Bad Ones” featuring Tegan and Sara. He has an archival album called Preacher’s Sigh & Potion: Lost Album due on June 25, which was recorded back in 2008.
Cedric Burnside’s upcoming album I Be Trying is also due on June 25. Burnside will be repping his grandfather R.L. Burnside’s style of Hill Country Blues on the album, with modern twist here and there. He shared two singles from it so far, “Step In” and “The World Can Be So Cold.”
Liz Cooper is a newer folk musician backed by a few rock musicians she calls The Stampede. They began releasing music as Liz Cooper & The Stampede in 2014 with their EP Monsters, and released a debut album in 2018 called Window Flowers. mxdwn premiered one of the songs from the LP named “Mountain Man” at the time the album was coming out.
