Bikini Kill 5/7-8/2022

Bikini Kill has just announced a 2022 tour where they stop for 2 nights at Mohawk (outdoors) in ATX for an all-ages show with doors opening at 8 pm and music starting at 9 pm. Although these show dates are more than a year out, their first night has already sold out, leaving their second night with limited tickets (so get yours now!)

American female powerhouse and punk rock band Bikini Kill is comprised of singer and songwriter Kathleen Hanna, guitarist Billy Karren, bassist Kathi Wilcox, and drummer Tobi Vail. The band formed in Olympia, Washington in 1990 with Hanna, Vail, and Wilcox meeting each other while attending The Evergreen State College in Washington. Bikini Kill’s shows were known for creating a female-centric environment urging women to come to the front of the crowd stage diving to personally remove male hecklers in the audience. Bikini Kill also pioneered the riot grrrl movement which was an underground feminist punk movement that began during the early 1990s starting in Olympia, Washington, and the greater Pacific Northwest to then expanding to at least 26 other countries.

Bikini Kill started out by releasing demo cassettes called Revolution Girl Style Now to then release Bikini Kill EP produced by Ian Mackaye of Minor Threat and Fugazi. Bikini Kill started to establish their audience to then releasing 2 more albums Pussy Whipped and a split album Our Troubled Youth / Yeah Yeah Yeah and upon their return to the U.S. the band began working with Joan Jett. Jett then produced their most well-known track Rebel Girl.

Bikini Kill broke up in 1997 after their last album Reject All America due to the hate Bikini Kill received from America due to the misrepresented media coverage on the riot grrrl movement. Hanna stated, “Bikini Kill was very Vilifies during the ’90s by so many people and hated by so many people, and I think that that’s been kind of written out of the history.” The band has just recently reunited for tours in 2019.
