Steely Dan is a reputable American rock band founded in 1971 that harnesses a quirky sound that blends influences of rock (although the pair never truly enjoyed rock) jazz, Latin music, R&B, and blues. Members Walter Becker (guitars, bass, backing vocals) and Donald Fagen’s (keyboards, lead vocals) truly defied all rock & roll conventions with a distinctive sound with complex harmonies and time signatures arranged with attainable melodic hooks.
Becker and Fagan met in 1967 at Bard College where they started playing in musical groups which at one point included future comedian Chevy Chase on drums. The pair then decided to move to Brooklyn where they had little success until Gary Katz, an associate of Kenny Vance who took an interest in the pair, moved to LA to become a staff producer for ABC records. Katz hired Becker and Fagen as staff songwriters which then turned into Katz producing all their 1970s albums in collaboration with Roger Nichols. Nichols would win six Grammy awards for his work with the band from the 1970s to 2001.
Steely Dan has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2001. VH1 ranked Steely Dan at no. 82 on their list of the 100 Greatest Musical Artists of All Time, and Rolling Stone ranked them No. 15 on its list of the 20 Greatest Duos of All Time.
Throughout their discography of albums, which included 7 albums before their disbanding in 1981 to then regroup in 1993 to release 2 more albums, their album Two Against Nature received two Grammy’s for Album of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album in 2000. Their album Cousin Dupree received the Grammy from Best Pop Performance by A Duo or Group with Vocal the same year. Their albums Gaucho and Aja both have received 2 Grammy nominations and their singles Ricky Don’t Lose That Number and FM (No Static at All) have both received Grammy nominations as well.
